Review of Event Horizon (1997) by Jason V — 16 Jun 2012
It feels like Event Horizon is half a movie. Meaning the following: what is presented as an entire film is simply a prologue to an even bigger story, something with deep symbolism, philosophy and religious overtones.
I'm thinking the second part would look something like the end of Disney's The Black Hole (a depiction of hell). But Event Horizon simply stops after it rips off Alien, generic ghost stories, the equally bad Supernova and any number of other films.
Why is it this bad? The premise is sound enough (until the movie turns from science fiction to science horror) and the production values are generally above average. It's the last half hour or so, with a possessed ship, hallucinations and the dreaded H word (hell).
The film has no idea where it wants to go or what it wants to say. Which means, in the long run, it has no reason to exist.
