Review of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1994) by Kerri W — 29 Sep 2005
Okay, not every movie is to be taken seriously. And with exactly that kind of thought in your head is the way you should see this movie. Lesbians, homosexuals, looking for an own identity ... it is one of the recurring themes in Gus van Sant's movies. need I to refer to "My own private Idaho"?
Sissy Hankshaw was born with very large thumbs, and uses these to lift through the whole country. Sounds absurd enough? Add to that a ranch that is in fact a beauty ranch with wannabe cowgirls and fat ladies, and hilarity is ensued.
You need to see this movie as it was meant to see - not like in "MOPI", where you need to see it at least four times before geting the gist of the plot, but it really just is a "feel good" movie. An "on the road" movie as well.
Keanu Reeves who plays a full blood indian? Pat Morita (Karate kid movies) as a horny indian? Uma Thurman as a girl with extremely large thumbs? Rain Phoenix as a very rough cowgirl? It's just hilarious.
See it. And keep in mind, you need to laugh about this one, you need to get the humor. And, there's even a cameo by William Burroughs - God bless the man.
And the movie was dedicated to River Phoenix. (He is in it as well) "For River." A fitting, but very crazy tribute.
It's getting an 8 from me. I seriously don't get the bad reviews - don't look for the serious side in this movie; there is none. Just enjoy it as it is.
