Review of Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) by Dukejon — 30 Jun 2020
Nowhere near as good as some of Will Ferrell's best work such as Anchorman or Elf, but this movie is definitely worth your time. There are some great set pieces, and the sequence in the mansion with all the ex-eurovision winners is particularly strong.
However quite a lot of the time you're waiting for the next joke to fall. The film is overlong at 2 hours, and with some editing they could have made it into a much better experience. Rachel McAdams is particularly strong as the sweet yet ditzy Sigrit, and Pearce Brosnan puts in a good performance.
I feel almost that the weakest link is actually Will Ferrell. He's just too old to be carrying off these kind of characters, and his comedic performance instantly reminds you of how he has played characters in previous movies.
Nice gentle sending up of Icelandic culture.
