Review of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) by Wesley M — 02 Nov 2015
Normally I'm really put off by 'first world relationship problem' movies, but this one has a great hook and the performances are great.
When I say "first world relationship problems" I mean those movies where two people who live comfortable lives with minimal external stressors somehow manage to screw up their own interactions for petty reasons that could be solved if they were just a bit more mature or more willing to communicate.
And while that does seem to be the problem here, the *solution* is where things get interesting, and the drama is not from complications int he relationship, it is in fact entirely psychological.
So the uniqueness of the premise and the skill of the execution make this a very touching film that successfully makes me forget that it is Jim Carrey and actually does have some interesting things to say despite the fact that the protagonists are, at first blush, rather bland.
