Review of Escape from L.A. (1996) by Keenan S — 05 Aug 2013
Not since Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome have I seen an action sequel so thoroughly underrated! I don't care what anyone says, Escape From L.A. is absolutely awesome from start to finish! Unlike the more serious and suspenseful original, this sequel takes a different approach and is instead an action film so wild, goofy, and totally aloof that I adored every second of its glorious weirdness.
It had a hang glider action scene, a surfing action scene, a strange basketball game of death, and many other wonderfully over the top moments. This film becomes a masterpiece of utter absurdity and it embraces its weird and goofy nature to the fullest extent and then keeps going past that extent.
I don't care if it's blasphemy: Escape From L.A. is set to go down as one of the best action films I've ever seen. It's pure, ridiculous joy. It might not be as good as its predecessor, but it is a damn good action film.
