Review of Escape from L.A. (1996) by Jared S — 08 Jan 2014
Where to start? Snake Plissken riding a tsunami on a surf board while chasing down Steve Buscemi as "Map to the Stars Eddie"? No? How about Snake feeling up a transvestite accessory before embarking on a mission to go kill John Carpenter's perfected version of Che Guevara by way of sneak attack via hanging glider? No? Okay, let's start by saying Escape From LA is the more entertaining, but technically inferior sequel - or should I say remake - of Escape From New York.
Honestly, the action scenes are more fun and the all-out nature of this flick is what holds my interest I guess. Escape From New York felt like a slightly more genuine attempt at something unique and bold, but it ultimately came off as missing the mark and the opportunity to be something great. Escape From LA knows what it wants to be . Even with the much more dated effects than the original (which as I said was released 15 years prior), and even with the horrible acting and the worst dialogue I've heard in a film possibly ever, it comes off as a much more confident film than the first. So, uh - yeah, not sure if that makes it any better than the first, but to me it's more enjoyable, but ultimately almost the same exact movie save for more tongue in cheek gravy.
