Review of Escape from L.A. (1996) by Andrew L — 24 Apr 2018
15 years after Snake's time in New York he returns to Los Angeles for one more round, but this time the results are kind of odd. Kurt Russell is, of course, awesome and the rest of the cast is fine too.
The films effects have aged poorly, in 1996 they were considerable top of the line but now its just silly looking. The soundtrack is also pretty cool featuring a lot of Alternative Rock and Metal music from the mid-90's.
"Escape From L.A." is sort of aware that its a rehash of the first film. The film even throws in some very ridiculous moments including a life of death game of shooting hoops, a murderous plastic surgeon (played perfectly by Bruce Campbell), surfing a giant wave through the city streets and a showdown in a Magic Kingdom-Esq park.
The biggest problem though is its tone. It still takes itself pretty serious even with its amount of dumb thrown in. Something about its plot too never gelled with me. I think if the film had not been somewhat self aware it could've been even better but as is stands it can be an over-the-top fun flick but its depends on what kind of movie you are expecting.
I enjoyed it but others may not.
