Review of Erin Brockovich (2000) by Jennifer A — 17 Sep 2009
Good performance by Julia Roberts makes this a passable, yet familar story.
Eric Brockovich (2000) - 6.4/10.
Director - Steven Soderbergh.
Starring - Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, Aaron Eckhart, Marg Helgenberger, Peter Coyote, Conchata Ferrell, Tracey Walter.
Based on a true story, Julia Roberts stars as Erin Brockovich, a file clerk who helps win a large class-action lawsuit against Pacific Gas and Electric.
I've never been a huge fan of Julia Roberts but she gives one of her best (if not best) performances in this film. On the surface she gives you a "trailer trash" vibe with her foul-mouth, brashness and suggestive attire. But her persistence is admirable as she becomes genuinely affected by the wrongdoings of a major corporation and the danger it poses to simple small-town folks; not unlike her. The fact that the way already know the ending and have seen similar films does lessen the impact though. It's a decent film, not a great one.
