Review of Eraserhead (1977) by Kieran O — 26 Apr 2012
Films are usually banned for their graphic content, whether it be violence, nudity or even just a sensitive topic. I'm not a man who believes in censorship, but this movie really is not for the faint hearted. Take the worst nightmare/acid trip/fear encounter you've ever had, times it by 300 and your just nearing it. Not only does this film invoke fear, but after watching the film feels like a comedown after a bucket full of smack, your head is so fucked up trying to make out what the fuck it is you've just sat through, and that my friends is the power of David Lynch.
My theory is that David Lynch exposes the harsh and ugly realities that lie beneath the glittery glamour of modern society, although this film may shock/confuse/bewilder the viewer upon first encounter, the movie brings into consideration all kinds of different topics, if analysed closely enough. It brings into account the topic of acceptance and tolerance, as well as temptation and our raw instinct. A theory as to why the mother may have walked out in this film. The "In Heaven" scene has to be one of the most harrowing and haunting scenes in cinema history, it might just come off as creepy as shit to some people, however, being the arty farty chap that I am I'd say that the woman in the radiator represents the beauty that lies within heaven that lies beyond what the eye see's. Additionally, humanities intolerance or in a more frank sense, ignorance to that of which we cannot comprehend.
