Review of Equals (2015) by Jaime S — 06 Dec 2018
Ditching emotions in the future is far from a fresh theme, but Equals plays it well. The close-up of fingers (almost) brushing, lips, eyes and hands makes the movie quiet and sensual -- there are actually few spoken lines, the director and writer relying on the emotive leads to do most of the storytelling through body language.
Stewart is as underrated as always, carrying off rigid control and tearful despair with equal aplomb. There are a few missteps -- why would people who don't care for emotion value art, even informative art? -- but overall it's an enjoyable and thoughtful movie.
The Venn diagram of those who would've preferred the downer ending and those who would've preferred a cleaner end-resolution has zero overlap, and perhaps that's why this one fell flat with the critics.
One thing about the ending did manage to genuinely surprise me, and that in itself was worth the price of admission.
