Review of Entrapment (1999) by Derek S — 17 Mar 2008
Unfortunately for Entrapment, I just recently watched one of the greatest heist movies of all time, Rififi, which sheds a much more realistic light on what it might be like to be involved with a heist then Entrapment does. In Entrapment's defense however, the movie is more about an-ever changing relationship between the character played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Sean Connery's character. Sean Connery plays the part of an infamous thief who is very good at what he does and Catherine Zeta-Jones is sent to catch him in the act and bring him to justice.
The relationship between the two is interesting and the planning of heists in the movie is fun to watch despite being far-fetched at times. Entrapment is very Hollywood, which means it utilizes a lot of the Hollywood cliches, such as people dangling from heights as cables holding them slowly break.
This is a popcorn flick and one that expects quite an knack for suspension of disbelief from its audience.
The movie is saved however by decent characters, some clever creativity, and some really great twists and turns. It does keep you guessing and it is fun to watch, it just falls apart if examined too closely.
Enjoy Entrapment, but just don't expect too much from it.
