Review of Enemy (2014) by Junelkean — 25 Jun 2017
Mystery movies do not answer the questions, but instead raise questions to let the audience members answer it. These kinds of films allow the public to participate and create a discussion for their interpretation, and Denis Villanueve brings one with this metaphorically eccentric narrative. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as two characters - history professor Adam Bell and stage actor Anthony Claire.
Figuring out the themes is an intense yet disturbing ride that let's everyone leave questions on their mind after watching it. And what makes this film exceptional is the technique of how the story is revealed in a bizarre and thrilling way. As the movie continues, it solves the puzzle until it reaches its unclear and terrifying ending. The hidden meanings and symbolisms show significance to the characters and their trials throughout the entire run time. Gyllenhaal is outstanding as always, alongside with Melanie Laurènt and Sarah Gadon, making this one of the best movies of 2013.
VERDICT: Villanueve proves to become a jack of all trades by the versatility of his works in his second collaboration with Gyllenhaal in a very puzzled, well-shot and out of the ordinary film.
