Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Hayley V — 03 Aug 2008
This is an interesting and intriguing film, which captures the unique and crazy individuals that inhabit Antarctica. However it also conveys man's endless fascination/obsession with understanding and to some point controlling the world.
Even the beautiful and magestic Antarctica cannot remain untouched from human's domination. Despite the freezing weather and extreme living conditions, human's end up there to make discoveries: from disturbing seals to find a treatment to ageing (because we human's are sooo special) to diving beneath the ice and risking death etc to find new species - the people featured just seem endlessly fascinated with finding a scientific reason for everything.
A scene which brings home to me that we are just one of the species on the planet and brings us right back down to earth is the part where a group go to "survival camp" and are trained to find a landmark with bins on their head.
In the end this combined with the comical and laughter provoking segment regarding penguins, becomes all the more meaningful when you realise that we are just like that sole penguin wandering off aimlessly.
..it would be kind of funny looking down on us.
