Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Matthew B — 02 Feb 2009
The cinematography is excellent!! It made the movie worthwhile for me. This documentary tries to give you a look at some of the people that spend large amounts of there time living and working at the south pole.
Everybody from mechanics to Ph.D.'s and their story of what attracted them and what they do/study. The problem is that, there are only so many people at the south pole, and it felt like he was desperately trying to find people to interview, and a good number of them didn't have much of a story to tell except for the researchers.
Maybe it is the scientist in me, but I wish he told more of their story. The second problem is that narration done by Herzog. In Grizzly Man, Herzog's narration was to tell a story, but in this, with very little story, it was getting rather annoying and didn't add much or anything.
It would have been better if he narrated less or not at all. But, like I've already mentioned, if you like wonderful cinematography than this movie is for you.
