Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Garrett R — 02 Oct 2010
After viewing ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, I would like to visit Antarctica in my lifetime. I would not have said this if I did not see Werner Herzog's amazing film. It seems that Herzog is channeling James Cameron's avid interest in planetary wildlife and combining with that interest a character study of those living in Antarctica, only that he uses these devices as a guise for his documentary filming format.
Herzog's fascination with Anarctica carries over to the audience, which is a great thing as the journey he undertakes (especially the underwater sequences or landscape shots) are absolutely breathtaking and majestic. Having wrote, directed and produced ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, Werner Herzog's amazing film lets Anarctica's interesting and wonderful inhabitants tell their stories and their future goals. Just hearing what a former Cambridge graduate student-turned linguist and plant farmer in the South Pole tell his story and how an expert diver manages to swim in -2 degree water. There's much more to see and hear in ENCOUNTERS, as Herzog just about covers all of Anarctica with his journey to see how the people of Antarctica live their lives.
For fans of any kind of documentaries, striking imagery, even a slight interest in Antarctica and definitely Herzog's work, I implore you to view ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD with an open mind and clear eye. That way, you will take in plenty of inner meaning from this amazing film. Be ready for more Critiques and Opinions on Every Movie I Can Get My Hands On!
