Review of Encounters at the End of the World (2007) by Simon D — 01 Jun 2015
The most fascinating aspect of Herzog's documentary is his interest in the individuals who live and work in the Antarctica. What elevates this film is its insinuation that we as a species serve a purpose to simply gaze upon the earth with awe and respect.
Our consciousness separates us from all other species. In a sense, we are custom-made artists at heart. Most importantly, watching the insane penguin wander off to his most certain doom left me feeling strangely accepting of all things tragic.
The penguin must have known the outcome of rebelling against the others; his decision to depart in the direction of nothingness, was surely a conscious one. He was the bleakest of all penguins.
