Based on the book "His Majesty's Salvation", Emperor is a compelling post-war account of Douglas McCarthur's (Tommy Lee Jones) investigation into whether Emperor Hirohito instigated the war or not.

Leading the investigation is Gral. Bonner Fellers (Matthew Fox) who also at the same time seeks an ex-lover (Eriko Hatsune) who may have been killed in an air raid. The film often looks and feels like an average TV movie, particularly with some insipid dialogue made worse by a frustratingly slippery grasp of what makes the Japanese mind tick, but the story itself presents fascinating subject matter and does lead to two strong emotional payoffs: Feller's love story resolution, and McCarthur's final face-to-face meeting with emperor Hirohito (Takataro Kataoka).
