Review of Elevator to the Gallows (1958) by Gabe A — 13 Aug 2008
The quote-unquote first film of French New Wave. You can definitely spot the influences in later movies from this one, and its self-awareness sets it apart - the murder-gone-wrong plot has definitely been done before.
Another unimpeachable thing from this movie? The great soundtrack from Miles Davis: you can hear him beginning the experiments with modal style that would blossom two years after this flick with "Kind of Blue".
