Review of Elephant (2015) by William J — 04 Sep 2009
A mesmerising, poetic meditation on a high school massacre that builds up slowly but never feels like it's over-staying its welcome. There's very little dialogue - these school kids seem incapable of having anything but the most throwaway of conversations - but the use of music is spot on.
Breathtakingly long tracking shots give it beauty (and encourage the viewer to see things from several points of view), whilst the chilling scenes of violence give it brutality...it's a strange, but winning combination.
