Review of El Topo (1970) by Maxwell D — 28 Feb 2008
Saying this movie is 'weird' would be an understatement. It's the most bizarre thing I've seen in I dunno how long. Alejandro Jordorowsky is the man, though. Halfway through, I didn't know whether I liked this movie or not.
After I saw it, I realized that I fucking loved this movie. I didn't get a lot of the symbolism, but I enjoyed the story and surrealness of it all. While I do agree with Victor that John Lennon was just trying to sound cool when he said this was his "favorite movie", if he didn't say that, then the movie wouldn't be that popular.
(I didn't see it because of the John Lennon thing. I found that out after I saw it.) Anyway, it's certainly not for everyone, and the 2nd half isn't as good as the 1st, but if you can stomach this sort of thing, you'll have a good time.
Or be completely weirded out. Or both. Cheers.
