Review of El Topo (1970) by Ian M — 09 Oct 2008
I really loved the cinematography and costume design at the beginning. Absolutely beautiful. And there's some great symbolism and weirdness later on. But this didn't make up for the film's biggest flaw for me: a lack of immersion.
I could not get into the story or the characters, which meant the slow pace worked against it and it felt emotionally dull. Which is a shame because there really are some truly great moments and ideas in here.
