Review of El Topo (1970) by Drew B — 14 May 2008
I just watched the remastered Tartan DVD, and the picture quality is amazing.
As for the film, well it's certainly not for everyone and I personally - not being particularly eloquent - would describe it as a surreal, confusing and violent Spaghetti Western with a lot of religious imagery. Perhaps if I had donned some tight corduroy loon pants and taken a cupboard full of drugs before watching it I would have attained the same plane of consciousness as those seventies moviegoers and the film would have blessed me with a spiritual enlightening and a full re-aligning of my chakras....or something.
