Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Tj S — 06 Aug 2018
One of the best written movies of 2018 so far. Why was the writing so good? Bo Burnham was able to capture this specific moment in ones life so well it felt realistic and authentic. As I was watching this movie I was literally feeling what our lead character was feeling, i've been there! The confidence issues, anxiety, putting yourself out there, etc.
I love the directors choice to use Youtube and social media to express the effect these things have had on today's youth and these very real issues someone at that age deals with. The YouTube videos Kayla would make took these issues she was dealing with and explained them to the audience, followed by scenes showing her overcome these life obstacles and finding herself.
I would cringe throughout this movie either because I had been there or I had seen a similar situation play out the way it did in the movie. That is good writing!! This movie was also directed so well by first timer Bo Burnham.
Once again A24 knocks it out of the park with another great movie. I'll be surprised if this doesn't make my top 10 at the end of the year.
