Review of Edmond (2006) by Adam A — 07 Aug 2009
Flat out an awesome movie that stays with you. This is an honest, raw, bleak depiction of a man fed up with his position in life. A "Steppenwolf" of the 21th century, Edmond is a guy who questions his comfortable existence with a wife he does not love. During his quarrel wanderings on the street of New York City he gets confronted with the darker side of life.
David Mamet adapts his own play into a truly gem of a script with one powerful monolouge after the other and Stuart Gordon shows why he is much more than just the the avergare horror director. Gordons style is incredible. By using a simple mise-en-scene and making elegant leaps from one scene to the next, he just makes it seem so bloody easy. By soothing the eyes with his elegant pictures, he makes room for the ears to give full notice to the many scenes of talking.
Not to mention the acting in this little movie. Macy's performance as Edmond is up on The Macy Top 5 Performances (together with Lundegaard in "Fargo", Donnie in "Magnolia", Lootz in "The Cooler" and... hmmm... Parker in "Plesantville"?). He is basically friggin' amazing in this movie! Plus, Julia Stiles once again shows why she is one of the absolut best actresses of her generation, Joe Mantegna is balls out wonderful and we get Jeffrey Combs in a small cameo.
This is a must-see.
