Review of Eaten Alive (1976) by Ralph R — 05 Oct 2008
Here's an odd one. The lighting is bathed in hazy and overbearing primary colors. The acting is laughable - and there are times when its perfectly in place and then not. There's a ton of that kind of werid, inexplicable and clumsy behavior which seemed to permeate any really trashy horror flick from the 70s.
We are treated to sequence after sequence of confusing, muddled activity. Almost all the characters are insane or idiotic. This would all be great if the film was half as genuinely frightening as Hooper's 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' - but it is sadly nowhere near as grim or brutal or shocking.
Tobe Hooper could craft a wonderful, harrowing mood but here it has nowhere to go. Not as fun as it should have been.
