A film of its time, but not one which stands the tests of time without tarnish. The whole premise was always flawed - to drop out you had to be rich - to get rich you had to do 'a deal'. The hippy ideal was always diluted by commercialisation, and the rednecks would always bite back.

Of course it's a seminal work, taking the movie business by the scruff of its neck and forcing the music of the 40-minute LP down its reluctant throat. Long hair could be clean, cool and parent/career friendly?

40 years on and we know that the rednecks are still winning. The drug business has destroyed american morality and exacerbated rich/poor emnity until it dominates the whole world. The Louisiana meatheads in their gunracked-pickup have chosen too many presidents - it is they who were Born to be Wild; Hopper and Fonda remain cute curiosities who never really changed the world.
