Just fantastic. A wry adaptation of the novel, and a subtle play of Cain v. Abel. James Dean is kind of obnoxious, yet you can't take your eyes off of him. Guess that was the appeal. Throw in some great camerawork and pacing from Kazan and company, and you've got yourself a classic.
