Review of East of Eden (1955) by Simon T — 15 Jun 2018
The odd thing about East of Eden now is how mannered and self-regarding James Dean's breakout performance seems now. The best and most nuanced acting comes from Raymond Massey as the conflicted father and Jo van Fleet as the damaged mother.
Dean is all twitches and childish grandstanding. It's a pity because Elia Kazan's slightly ponderous direction also benefits from selfless support by Julie Harris and Burl Ives and a plangent score by Leonard Rosenman.
