Review of East Is East (1916) by Nyk P — 12 May 2011
On the surface, "East is East" is hilarious, moving and intense. What worries me, personally, is that when you start to scratch the surface, and peel away the humour and drama, nothing more substantial than plain racism is found - Eastern culture settling into submission under the weight of the Western dominance.
The film-makers probably had no intention of this, but it does spoil the film as a whole somewhat.
