Review of Earth to Echo (2014) by Kathryn K — 03 Jul 2014
My 8 year old liked it. But this is a terrible movie. A direct rip off of ET, Super 8 with a bit of Wall-E's girlfriend Eva thrown in. I love a good movie. And I'm not a stickler for "Could this really happen?!" But what I am a stickler for is "Are the characters acting in believable ways in the face of the unbelievable?" In Super 8, all the kids behave in ways that are credible to the situation.
And you genuinely like the kids in Super 8 and ET. In Earth to Echo, we never get to see the kids interact with each other in ways that kids do. There is some sort of tension between Tuck and one of the other characters.
They get mad for no reason and make up for no reason in an instant. I'm not saying the boys in and of themselves are not likable. They are. They just don't interact with each other as though they have any shared history.
I kept thinking back to "Stand By Me". The writing was brilliant, the kids interaction believable, poignant and painful. And in that last scene in Stand By Me, you felt all the power of their friendships and the paths that life was going to take them on.
This was a snooze.
