Powerful and moving portrait of the painful madness of partition that ripped the Indian subcontinent at dawn of independence in 1947. Deepa Mehta manages to give shades of grey, and sometimes outright black, to the main characters; something not usually seen in Bollywood, but then this movie is not your run-of-the-mill Hindi movie.
