Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Sandro R — 01 Jan 2018
Dunkirk is a survival thriller in a war setting, ignoring genre conventions. It's an overwhelming experience, with beautiful practical effects, real planes and ships. It looks and sounds great.
Nolan, who has a tendency to overexplain and overcomplicate things, does a 180 degree turn here. The characters are understated, but it works, and it feels real.
