Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Max M — 24 Jul 2017
By removing all chances for character development, this film has nothing to offer other than some nice practical effects and realistic war sequences, since the event itself has been portrayed before. Unique and interesting characters are the reason films like Apocalypse Now and Saving Private Ryan have been so acclaimed.
Nolan does succeed in using a unique narrative structure to get to the expected ending of the overall evacuation, but his fictionalized individual tales end too simply and straightforward for a structure promising a more complex story.
