Review of Dumplings (2004) by Kenny C — 27 Aug 2007
An intresting little film, ive seen the short from the 3 extremes short film compolation , so I was intreged to see how they streched a 40min film into 90 mins, and it partically succeeds ,purely by being morbidly fascinating.
it aims at shock valuve more then pure overal shocks, you might even be put off by some of the goings on, but if you like this sort of horror which is verging on a Body horror of sorts then you might well enjoy it, as for story , its hard to care or stay intrested in the main character of Mrs Li when see is such a cold hearted cow.
Aunt Mei was a gd character and helped make the film watchable. so if you can handle, scenes of abortion, a bit of cannablism , and slow paced horrors set in minimal locations then give it a go. I also think you kind of need to understand the chinese culture a little, other wise a few things might completely go over your head.
so an intresting film, but in my opoinon works better as a short film. if your not sqeimish about middle aged women eating chopped up fetouses the try it out, its not an easy film.
