Review of Duck Soup (1933) by Joey K — 15 Apr 2008
I've seen a lot of Marx Brothers movie, and while they're all entertaining (and very funny) this film stands head and shoulders above all their others. Considering that they were stars in the 20's and 30's, it's quite mind boggling to see them get away with so much.
By that, I'm not only talking about their jokes (many of which could still be considered offensive), but also their film's message. While most of their films didn't have overt messages (although they did stand for anarchy and rebellion when such activities were actively suppressed) Duck Soup goes so far as taking on fascism, war and politics in 1933.
This is a truly daring and funny movie.
