You might see it as a rebuke to Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign, which pledged zero tolerance for both narcotics and those hooked on them; the film operates in a greyer area, choosing to speak from some experience.
.. The downside is that it's still very much un film de Gus Van Sant: modish and rarely more than surface-deep.
