Review of Drugstore Cowboy (1989) by John H — 30 Dec 2012
Drugstore Cowboy is one of the great, underappreciated gems of '80s cinema. Fine performances by Matt Dillon, Kelly Lynch and James LeGros. And Heather Graham turns in a good effort as well.
Cinematography here is a plus, director Van Sant mixing realist with formalist / surrealist registers with aplomb. Some wickedly black humor too, especially the scene where Dillon and Lynch wrangle over how to relocate a body from their rented motel room's attic to the trunk of their car at the exact same time the parking lot is packed with police and police cars. (There's a police officers convention in town, you see.).
Anothe big plus: a fine 10-minute cameo from William Burroughs, in real life the author of Naked Lunch. His performance is worth the price of admission in itself.
