If you want to see how Gus Van Sant became the amazing director he is now, watch this! This easily influenced "pop drug" films like "Requiem For A Dream" and "Trainspotting".
It can be dead serious or hilarious. It reminds me a lot of the seriocomic touches of Kubrick. And it offers a sharp and wry perspective on the generational gap in the drug culture.
