Review of Drive (2011) by Jonathan B — 08 Sep 2018
This grim, violent tale has at heart a crackling tension that is provided by the onscreen electricity between Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan. They do so much with glances and flickers of emotion and it is simply magical to watch these two fine actors play with the audience.
There's some gruesomely, shockingly violent scenes as the unnamed Driver becomes caught up in a heist plot that doesn't go as planned. This means he has to act quickly to protect the girl he has fallen in love with from the criminal gang out to get its money.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn the film has a glossy, stylised and arthouse look. There's plenty of scenes which allow for long, lingering silences interspersed with fast, high-octane car chases and violence making it a real rollercoaster.
The eclectic score is both unusual and effective, adding much to the feel of this movie which I would definitely watch again.
