Review of Dreams (1990) by Mloy X — 09 Nov 2011
Dreams is eight short stories inspire by actual dreams from the brilliant mind of Akira Kurusawa and is a great example of what a wonderful visionary Kurusawa was; I mean, the man even dreams beautfully!
The first short story was cute but a little sad. The parading of foxes was enchanting but intimidating. The deities' dance in the "Peach Orchard" was a visual feast; the stage was scenic, vibrant and just breathtakingly gorgeous. "Blizzard" was full of profound symbolism but by far my favorite was "Tunnel" because it was so poignant and gut-wrenching. "Crows" was fun and I especially like that it incorporated a lot of Van Gogh's work. "Mount Fuji in Red" and "The Weepind Demon" was pretty prophetic in retrospect and scary (especially after what happened at Fukushima). "Village of the Watermills" was heartwarming and inspiring. Overall the film was very entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable and it's underlying message about man's relationship with nature was enlightening and thought-provoking.
