Review of Dream Home (2010) by Ryan M — 04 Sep 2011
How far will you go to buy your dream home? Whatever your answer is, I'm sure it's not as far as Miss Cheng went in this extreme, unapologetic, brutal slasher flick. I've always believed that Hong Kong has a wealth of talented directors, with a style distinctly all their own. And this film once again proves that.
This is obviously not for the faint of heart, but if you are entertained by films like Final Destination and Saw, this is worth seeing. The first murder scene (with the guard) was a simple concept, but utterly forgiving nonetheless that I literally had to hold up my hand to my mouth. That scene sets the tone... and the rest of the film lives up to that promise of a crazy, anything-goes slash galore. Trust me... you will be wide-eyed and gasping.
I do have to agree with one review here on Flixster... the film does not answer many specific questions. Like, how was this woman driven to such kind of insanity? The films shows snippets of her childhood, but none of those scenes can make anyone go crazy, especially not THAT crazy.
Why is she so strong? She is a typical desk drone, barely having any physical exercise. And she is the stereotypical, waifish Asian chick. And then she takes down all these men?
But if you overlook these unanswered questions, you are in for a ride.
And the film could have been much shorter. The director could have just compressed all the gory scenes together (instead of being interspersed with the flashbacks) so that the viewer is shocked from start to finish without break. Now that would have been even more entertaining.
