Review of Dragonslayer (1981) by Reymondo L — 13 Sep 2014
Made in 1981 and still the best portrayal of a dragon in film - and that includes Smaug in the recent Hobbit film.
The characters are well described and each have their motivation. On top of which the performances are generally good to solid.
The scenery is beautiful and the sets authentic.
The overall approach to the relationship between magic, fantasy, religion, life and love is very mature and compelling.
And the dragon... the dragon is believable both physically and conceptually. It is not just an engine of destruction, it also a thing to be pitied, a living creature brought to malevolence by its age and infirmity.
There is depth in this film if you care to look for it, or you can simply enjoy a very well-told tale.
