Review of Dragon Blade (2015) by Michael S — 15 Aug 2017
Proof that China can make truly shitty epics too. While there are many reasons it fails so spectacularly - woeful miscasting (John Cusask as a Roman soldier?), confusing narrative, lackluster battle scenes, terrible pacing - the biggest one is its maddeningly inconsistent tone.
It quickly veers from playful Jackie Chan fights to maudlin speeches to graphic violence (eye gouging, severed limbs). It's all over the map. Lingering question: If all the Roman soldiers have American accents, why is Adrien Brody's villain British?
