Review of Dracula (1958) by Michael T — 02 Feb 2008
I love the old British Hammer films. Christopher Lee's Dracula is pretty close to how one would envision Stoker's Dracula. Not a suave, Byronesque vampire but a Darwinian superman. Peter Cushing is also very good as Van Helsing.
Van Helsing is played as an obsessed crusader much like Cushing's Baron Frankenstein in THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN is obsessed with creating life, Van Helsing is obsessed with destroying the "cult of the undead" no matter what the cost.
The budget was low but Terrence Fisher's direction is assured.
