Review of Dr. No (1962) by John V — 31 Aug 2010
It is neither the quintessential Bond film - that is Goldfinger - nor is it the greatest of all Cold War spy thrillers - that is From Russia with Love - but it is the film which proverbially started it all.
Ursula Andress's Botticellian entrance is still breathtaking, and Joseph Wiseman's elegantly sinister Dr. No is one of OO7's most regal adversaries. Anthony Dawson, Zena Marshall, Jack Lord, and Bernard Lee (the greatest M) form a solid, typically luminous Bond film supporting cast.
And Sean Connery, still a bit green in the role, utters his characteristic introduction with impeccable style; there is no parallel to his Bond. Undoubtedly a classic for all cinema.
