Review of Dr. Black, Mr. Hyde (1979) by Sean N — 02 Mar 2008
Dr Black Mr Hyde (William Crain 1976).
'A screamin' demon rages inside, turnin' him into Mr Hyde... don't give him no sass or he'll kick yo' ass!'.
The great Bernie Casey stars as Dr Pride who is trying to find a cure of sclerosis of the liver. Unfortunately he makes the age old mistake of trying a serum on himself...
As one of the cops puts it "He's a haint - a cross between the abominable snowman and Willy the werewolf!". Its played pretty straight and is certainly on a level with the Blacula films. The fx are by a young Stan Winston and pretty good for the time. Its unfortunate that Hyde looks like a black albino as the other guys don't seem to notice and just think of him as a white guy. There's lots of subtext about drugs and prostitution but eventually its a tribute to the good old monster movie with an ending appropriate for the genre. Worth it just for Casey alone. A good one!
