Review of Downsizing (2017) by Neil S — 11 Jan 2018
I watched the new Matt Damon movie, Downsizing, last night and it exceeded my expectations. I expected it to be bad but it was so much worse than expected. I actually don't know what type of movie this was supposed to be but this movie was just a Nothing.
Poor attempts at romance, comedy, suspense were all overshadowed by a complete lack of plot and character development. Also, Matt Damon looks exactly how I expect my friend Jake Derricks to look in 20 years and that was kind of distracting the whole time.
The whole allure of this movie was that all the people get shrunk down and live very tiny lives. But after the first 20 minutes, you forget they're shrunken down because everything around them is tiny too and they never have real-sized objects for comparison.
That was all I wanted. I wanted Matt Damon messing around with some like giants coke cans or an ant the size of a school bus. But nope, we just got Matt Damon, being tiny, but relatively sized to everything around him.
Also, the idea of becoming tiny is you become super rich because things are cheaper when they're smaller. Without spoiling too much of the movie Matt Damon gets tiny, stays poor, and now still has a shitty life, just like he had when he was full sized.
But speaking of cold streaks, Matt Damon seems to be on one of his own lately, when was the last time he was in a good movie? 2006? .
