Review of Downsizing (2017) by Trevor W — 07 Jan 2018
Strange and uncoventional storytelling is the magic of downsizing. With incredible performances across the board and fascinating ideas about how we see and live life, this movie is one of the most intelligent movies of the year.
The only reason I give this four stars is because this film isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, considering it's lack of a traditional plot arc commonly seen in western filmmaking. But still I have to applaud this bold choice.
It is a story for all its weirdness, somehow feels real and lived in. It shows the story of an ordinary guy living in an extraordinary world. It's a movie about tiny people sailing through Norway talking about climate change and it still manages to be subtle and believable and at certain points romantic.
After all of this I have to give a shout out to Hong Chao, this really just stole the show even from Matt Damon. I highly recommend downsizing, if you are ready to suspend your belief and enter a world where people can be small, death is lurking not so far ahead, and beauty abounds in every way.
