Review of Downfall (2004) by John N — 23 Jul 2011
People who shy away from foreign films, or avoid them all together, need to see this picture. It will change you. This is in my opinion this is the best movie ever made to capture the final days of the Third Reich and specifically Adolf Hitler.
The film is historically accurate down to the correct medals being worn on the uniforms. Where there is artistic license taken, such as the sub plot with a Hitler Youth boy who receives the Iron Cross, it only adds to the film and keeps the film from being a total docu-drama.
Bruno Ganz plays Hitler perfectly in a performance that rivets the viewer not during the expected scenes of insanity, but during the quiet sensitive moments no one has ever dared portray before. His physical resemblance to the real Hitler is also uncanny.
The fact that the entire film is in German only adds to the viewer's experience. Don't rent this if you haven't seen it. Buy it.
