Review of Dope (2015) by Donovan M — 21 Jun 2015
At its heart, #Dope wants to be insightful and thought provoking but in reality it's just a good time. It starts out being 'Kidd and Play meets Boyz in The Hood' and turns into 'The Wire goes hi tech'.
Don't believe the hype that pushes this movie up as some kind of social commentary on stereotypes and social norms. I can't take this message seriously in a movie that cast every character as a stereotype and drop enough "N"-bombs to make NWA proud.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not faulting 'Dope' for these two decisions, but because these decisions were made, you shouldn't take the movie for anything other than what it is; a coming of age teen comedy about three high school kids who get caught in the middle of a drug deal gone wrong.
Throw in some really funny lines by Diggy and Jib (Kiersey Clemons and Tony Revolori) and great acting by the lead Malcolm (Shameik Moore) you end up with a pretty good movie that will stand the test of time for this generation of teens.
